Design Education Group Meets at National Building Museum

Robin Vande Zande, chair of the Design Issues Group for the National Art Education Association (NAEA), invited people interested in design education to meet at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. July 9, 2008. They talked about plans for promoting design education in the schools.

Attending the meeting were (from left to right), Robin Vande Zande (Kent State), Graham Stroh (American Architecture Foundation), Kelly Malloy (AIA, Washington D.C.), Catherine Roussel (American Institute of Architects), Elizabeth Kowalchuk (University of Kansas), Fern Lerner (New York, NY), Wendy Friedmeyer (Design Institute - Univ. of Minnesota), Ann Erickson (Fairfax County Public Schools), Deanna Lewis (National Association of Home Builders), and Martin Rayala (Kutztown University).

They discussed plans for Design Education at the National Art Education Association conferences in Minneapolis in 2009 and Washington D.C. in 2010, decided to invite people to join an ongoing discussion with them on the social networking site http://DesignEducationK12.ning.com, plan to collect data on existing design education programs, discussed submitting a proposal for a name change for NAEA to include Design, and discussed holding an annual conference beginning July 9-10, 2009.
