Science, Technology, Engineering and DESIGN

Dean Kamen (right) is the extraordinary founder of the high school robotics competition, FIRST, and the leader of DEKA (his research and development company). People may know him as the inventor of the Segway but he is quite literally changing lives around the world.

Thousands of students have participated in the Robotics design competition he started called FIRST. Kamen started this program to give students interested in science, technology, engineering and design the chance to see what it is like to be treated the way high school athletes are commonly treated in schools. He thinks that science and technology are at least as important to the future of humanity as football.

Contrary to popular conceptions, Dean Kamen says there is no problem with supply in schools - the problem is demand. History has shown us that, if there is a demand, resources will be found to fill it. According to Kamen, we need to create a demand for education, because there are sufficient supplies to fill it.
