Burj Dubai, Tallest Building in the World, To Open in December

It is reported that the Burj Dubai (left) will officially open to the public on December 2, 2009 to coincide with United Arab Emirates National Day. The opening date of the world’s tallest building has been a closely guarded secret for years – however, a senior architect working on the project has confirmed that December 2 has been set aside for the opening.

Ceremonies to mark the launch are also being planned for December 2. It is not yet clear whether other parts of the tower will be fully accessible. The final piece of glass cladding to complete the exterior of Burj Dubai, was now ready and would be installed within weeks. Spanning six-metres in length, the panel is the last of 24,348 pieces of cladding fitted to the super-structure. (In the image on the left you can see the lower portions with the glass cladding in place while the upper portions are still to be installed when this photo was taken.)

The building is so much taller than any existing or planned buildings anywhere in the world that it is expected to hold its place as the tallest building in the world for quite some time. A sense of its height can be seen in the comparison with other tall buildings surrounding it (right).
