Compact Nikon Coolpix Has a Built-in Projector

Nikon introduced a new Coolpix point-and-shoot camera which has a unique feature: a built-in projector for playing back photos and videos on the spot. The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj will let you instantly project images right from the camera after you take them.

The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj ($430, available in September) also comes with a 12-megapixel sensor, a 5X optical Nikkor zoom lens (28mm to 240mm), a 2.7-inch-diagonal LCD, and ISO levels of up to 3200 at full resolution (as well as ISO 6400 at a 3-megapixel resolution). The miniature projector (on the front and center of the camera) has a 10-inch to 6.5-foot throw range, standard-definition VGA resolution, and a brightness rating of 10 lumens (as opposed to 1000 lumens of a big projector).

Watch for an explosion of applications the producers of the camera probably never intended or imagined. For starters you can project an image almost anywhere - a kick-me sign on someone's back, an image on someone's t-shirt, a message next to someone you'd like to meet, an image on a sketchbook page to start a sketch, a thought balloon above someone's head, an absent lover on your bedroom ceiling - people will scramble to come up with the most innovative applications.
